When One°15 Brooklyn Marina opens in time for the new boating season, it will dramatically enhance mooring opportunities on the Brooklyn side of New York’s East River. Marinetek Finland and Marinetek North America worked in tandem to deliver a giant breakwater system and pontoon moorings for superyachts up to 76 m in the new 150 berth marina.
The marina is located between Piers 4 and 5 within the Brooklyn Bridge Park, with the beautiful Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty in the background. In addition to a huge community dock it offers private slips and secure superyacht berths with access to upland facilities at a luxuriously appointed ‘Harbor Club’. The marina will increase the number of berths in New York City by approximately 25% and the Marinetek breakwaters will create the calmest marina basin in New York Harbor.
Calming the waters
In order to protect the marina from the wake of heavy ferry traffic and provide secure superyacht moorings, Marinetek is installing its largest and strongest floating concrete breakwater pontoons. Units are 5.3 m wide and 1.8 m high, and in lengths up to 20 m. The heaviest sections weigh 52.4 ton. The pontoons are equipped with two special open service channels for heavy-duty utility cables and feature twin keels for additional wave attenuation and enhanced stability.
“To win this remarkable and demanding project in the face of tough international competition says something about the superior technology of our products and our project management,” comments Marinetek Technical Director, Ville Leisti. The massive concrete units were shipped from Finland to Bay Ridge Anchorage, New York, and will be offloaded directly into the water and towed three miles along the river to the site. Marinetek North America undertook construction of the less exposed superyacht mooring sections using 3.8 m wide and 1.2 m high Super Yacht pontoons. These were transported by road from Florida.
All sections are joined together using maintenance-free, flexible, silent connectors, which are designed for rough water environments, and fitted with composite fendering. Mooring is via Seaflex, with ropes running up through the bottom of the dock in a cast-in-place flared tube which feeds to a top-access connection box. “This system keeps all anchoring rope and hardware out of sight and out of harm’s way, and provides a very secure and effective anchoring method,” explains Bob Berry, Project Development, Marinetek North America.
Dock with a view
As soon as the Marinetek main pontoon lines are in place, the interior floating system will be installed and the marina will be made ready for its grand opening. All superyacht slips will have high-voltage three-phase dockside power, Wi-Fi, in-slip pump-out and a “million-dollar view”.
“This is yet another iconic marina reference for Marinetek,” Leisti asserts, “and, as the engineering and project management was split between Marinetek Finland and Marinetek North America, it is an excellent example of how we work together as an efficient global team.”
